NICO, 1988 Unclassified 18+
An uncompromising, award-winning portrait of a unique artist during her late solo career, beyond her association with Andy Warhol and The Velvet Underground.
Manchester, 1986. Nico’s (Trine Dyrholm) heyday is long behind her. Embarking upon her latest international tour, she’s determined to be herself, pursue her solo career on her own terms and patch things up with her son.
After winning Berlinale’s Silver Bear for best actress for MIFF 2016’s The Commune, Dyrholm puts in another exceptional performance, inhabiting the German star with a convincingly defiant air and singing all of her own vocals in the process. It’s a feat that’s all the more compelling given the Venice Horizons-winning biopic’s approach, as debut feature director Susanna Nicchiarelli embraces Nico’s complications and addictions in her final years – all while crafting a film as enigmatic and energetic as its subject.
"A vintage pop biopic, baptized in the cleansing fire of release." – Variety
