Erich Von Stroheim is one of the eccentric masters of American film and his career as director and actor is examined in this film. Von Stroheim was a flamboyant showman and in his life and work, he endured some triumphs but a great deal of sadness and defeat. The film looks at all these elements, including the battle he had with Louis B Mayer over his greatest work Greed.

"Excerpts from 30 films directed by and/or starring Von Stroheim are well selected for key scenes to illustrate his range. These film clips, and the interviews, are bridged by a narration that is intelligent, wordly, ironic and leaving one wanting more." — Variety
