Squeaker's Mate

Squeaker and his mate are a primitive, illiterate, poverty-stricken pair, who eke out a miserable living from felling timber in the remote bush. They are bound together in a destructive relationship that she doesn't want to, and he cannot, break. 11 is the woman who does most of the backbreaking work, while Squeaker watches and lazes. She is a sturdy and capable bushwoman of massive dignity; he is vicious and dependent.

Following an accident which cripples his mate, Squeaker brings in Mary, his newly found help, who is unused to and afraid of the bush. The scene is now set for a major confrontation.
