Solitary and Abhorred

Beginning with the quote from Mary Shelley "Satan had his companions to admire and encourage him, but I am solitary and abhorred", Steve Bade reworks footage from James Whale's classic 1931 film Frankenstein. The quote refers not only to Frankenstein's monster, but also to the chemically treated, deteriorating film used to create this hypnotic film. The deterioration of the film draws one's attention from the central image to more peripheral details, creating an alternative narrative.The deteriorating surface also allows one to view the different layers of the film emulsion Colour tinting adds one final touch, drawing the hidden beauty from the overlying horror (AM/MK)
