No fashion designer has ever tested the ethics of their practice by personally visiting all their suppliers around the world. Mother of Pearl creative director Amy Powney decides to change that.

Fashion is one of the world’s most destructive industries. It pollutes air and water, profits from animal and human suffering, and generates mountains of landfill once the trend cycle moves on. Because global supply chains are so complex, many designers give up on doing better. But not Powney, who won the 2017 Vogue award for Best Young Designer of the Year. The daughter of activists who grew up on an off-grid farm, she has thrown out the ‘design as usual’ framework and taken up the challenge of building a completely sustainable collection for her cult-favourite label – from raw fibres to finished garments.

Whether you’re a seasoned fashionista or just someone who cares about the planet, Fashion Reimagined is a hopeful and enlightening documentary that brings you along on Powney’s travels of ethical discovery, from a Uruguayan sheep farm to an Austrian garment factory that uses steam, not chemicals, to process fabrics. In her zesty feature debut, England-based Canadian filmmaker Becky Hutner observes her subject’s metamorphosis from total sustainability newbie to a leading voice of a growing ethical movement within fashion.

“A colourful, sometimes shocking education … Hutner’s fine narrative structure, coupled with Powney’s appealing warmth and drive, will have you invested.” – FilmInk
