Program in Focus
The 1978 festival featured a selection of American silent classics. Nine feature films were curated for this section, including The Crowd (King Vidor, 1928), The Wind (Victor Sjöstrom, 1928), A Woman in Paris (Charles Chaplin, 1923) and The Last Command (Josef von Sternberg, 1928).

Other notable new films included That Obscure Object of Desire (Luis Buñuel), Citizen's Band (Jonathan Demme), The American Friend (Wim Wenders), The Apple Game (V?ra Chytilová)
