Program in Focus
The 1983 program featured a retrospective of veteran Australian filmmakers John Heyer and Cecil Holmes. Five Michael Nicholson short films were also screened, thematically centered on 'ironical comments on the social and political scene'. 

Films of note: The King of Comedy (Martin Scorsese), The Trout (Joseph Losey), The Woman in Love With Mechanic Gavrilov (Pyotr Todorovsky), Sunless (Chris Marker), Ten Thousand Suns (Ferenc Kosa).

John Heyer {focus John Heyer} and Cecil Holmes {focus Cecil Homes}. A retrospective of Heyer's and Holmes' work was screened.

The Melbourne Film Festival began as the idea of a few passionate individuals. A sub-committee, formed from delegates to the 1951 Australian Council of Film Societies film weekend, suggested that a small festival of films in the tourist town of Olinda should be held in 1952.
