1. GENERAL INFORMATION

When is the next festival?

Melbourne International Film Festival (MIFF) 2019 will run from Thursday 1 to Sunday 18 August 2019.

Does MIFF have a competition?

Yes, but only for short films – we do not have a competition for feature films. For more information on our short film competition refer to our Short Film Competition Regulations or visit our Shorts Awards page.

2. SUBMITTING A FILM

What are the eligibility criteria for film submissions?

To be eligible for consideration to MIFF 2019, all films must meet the following requirements:

  • Films must have been completed after 1 January 2018.
  • Films must not have been/will not be screened in the state of Victoria, Australia, in any form prior to August 19, 2019 - this includes television and internet broadcasting. The only exceptions to this requirement are for private screenings held for cast, crew, or investors, and film school graduation screenings.
  • Films must be in their original language with English subtitles if the original language is not English.

How do I submit?

All film submissions to MIFF must be made via the Withoutabox entry system – films sent through any other means will not be considered. To create a Withoutabox account and submit your film to MIFF, please go here.

For your submission to be placed under consideration, you must:

  • complete the online submission form via Withoutabox
  • select the appropriate film category
  • upload a working screener
  • pay the entry fee as required

Failure to do any one of these will result in the film not being considered for the 2019 festival. As we consider a vast number of films each festival, it is your responsibility to ensure that all conditions have been met. If the film hasn’t been placed into ‘In Consideration’ within two weeks of submitting, please double check that you have completed the above requirements. If you believe you have completed the requirements, please email submissions@miff.com.au with your Tracking ID.

Which film category should I choose?

Above all, you must ensure you select the correct category, otherwise you may be liable for fee increases.

Feature length films

You must select one of four feature categories:

  • Australian Feature Narrative
  • Australian Feature Documentary 
  • International Feature Narrative
  • International Feature Documentary

Short Films

You must select one of eight categories: 

  • Australian Fiction
  • Australian Animation
  • Australian Documentary
  • Australian Experimental
  • International Fiction
  • International Animation
  • International Documentary
  • International Experimental

Please ensure you select the correct category for your short film when submitting to ensure that your film is appropriately considered. Choosing the wrong category may adversely affect how your film is evaluated. If you have made an error, you must email submissions@miff.com.au ASAP and we can update this information for you.

VR

You must select one of two categories: 

  • Australian VR
  • International VR

PLEASE NOTE, IF THE FILM IS AN AUSTRALIAN CO-PRODUCTION IT QUALIFIES FOR THE AUSTRALIAN CATEGORY.

How do you define an Australian production?

The question of which country a film can be catalogued under relates to the funding, filming and post-production. If Australian funds were used in the development or production of the film, if the film was shot in Australia, and/or if the post-production work was done here, it can be classified at least as an Australian co-production and would be eligible to be submitted under the Australian category.

If the film is submitted in the Australian category and there is no indication that any of the above applies, we will change the category and a fee increase will be imposed. Failure to pay the fee increase by the end of the submission period will result in you forfeiting all fees paid and the film not being considered for the festival.

How do I pay the entry fee?

Once your online submission form has been completed you will be prompted to make payment. Please note, we only accept payment via Visa or MasterCard. We are not able to accept payment via PayPal or Amex.

How many films can I submit?

You may submit as many films as you like providing each film meets the submission criteria and requirements.

Please ensure that each film is on its own secure link.

Can I submit my film if it has previously screened at other festivals?

Yes, as long as the screenings weren’t within the state of Victoria, Australia prior to August 19, 2019.

Do you accept Works In Progress (WIPs) or ‘rough cuts’?

MIFF does accept submission of WIPs only if the following conditions have been met:

  • The film must be at least at picture lock stage.
  • The submission is made during the late submissions period ONLY. If a WIP is submitted during Early or Regular submissions period without any prior discussion with the submissions team, MIFF will disregard the submission and submission fees will not be refunded.
  • The submitter accepts that the rough cut is the ONLY VERSION that can be submitted. MIFF will not accept further cuts of the Film as they are completed. Please think very carefully about whether or not you should submit the Film as a WIP.

My film was not accepted last year, can I resubmit it?

If a film has previously been submitted to MIFF, it is not eligible for submission to the 2019 Festival. This also applies to WIPs that have previously been submitted, even with significant changes.

3. AFTER SUBMITTING A FILM

I have completed the online application, what should I do now?

Once you have successfully entered your film to the MIFF Withoutabox profile, your film will be assigned a Tracking ID of which you should take note. If you need to contact the festival at any point about your submission you will need to include this tracking number in the subject line of your email. Please upload your screener to the Withoutabox website.

Please do not send any press kits or publicity materials unless your film is selected and the festival expressly asks for them.

If my short film is an Australian or New Zealand production, how can I apply for Accelerator?

Accelerator is not open for application. Once you submit your short film through Withoutabox, you may send through your CV and a short write-up on your upcoming project/s as an expression of interest to submissions@miff.com.au. If your film is selected for our 2019 program, you will also be notified if you qualify for Accelerator.

I have made a mistake on my online form. What should I do?

Please immediately email submissions@miff.com.au with the film title, director’s name, Tracking ID and the correction/s to be made, and we will update our systems.

Can I post trailers, clips, and/or scenes of my film online?

You may post trailers, but clips or scenes must not be more than 10% of the film’s total runtime.

When will I be informed of the outcome of my submission?

We will email the main contact of the submission via email no later than the end of June 2019. As we administer a vast number of submissions, we ask that you please be patient with hearing from us.

If the main contact details change during the submissions period, you must inform MIFF at submissions@miff.com.au so we can reach you.

If my film is not selected, may I speak with a programmer for feedback? 

No, unfortunately, due to the volume of submissions we receive we are unable to correspond with each applicant in these circumstances. 

If my film is selected, what formats can MIFF screen my film in?

Shorts and Features

  • 35mm
  • 16mm
  • DCP (DCI Compliant)
  • Pro-Res

VR

  • Oculus
  • HTC Vive
  • 360-degree Video for playback through Gear VR
  • Mobile Application

If my film is selected, does MIFF provide screening tests prior to the film’s screening?

No, we do not have the facilities available to us to provide any screen tests. If you are concerned about your film, please check it prior to sending it to the festival.

4. VR

What headsets do you support for VR?

We support Oculus, HTC Vive, 360 Gear VR and Samsung Gear VR with controller.

Is there a time limit on VR experiences?

No. There is no time limit/duration imposed on VR works. Do you accept WIP VR works for consideration? Yes. If you have any questions about submitting a VR experience as a WIP, or if your experience requires specialised equipment, please contact submissions@miff.com.au  

How do you screen VR at MIFF?

  • 360-video: these are presented in a synchronous playback setting through mobile delivery.  Interactive: these works are presented in accordance with the work's specific requirements.
